How to refresh your home in 2023

How to refresh your home in 2023

It’s the start of a new year. A time when we typically look to hit refresh and make improvements.

Every year we spend time setting personal goals – lose weight, read more, get fit – but what about resolutions for your home?

As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, it’s likely the pressure is on to save money. Perhaps a planned house move is off the cards, or an extension has been priced out of the equation – but don’t feel too despondent.

If you’re feeling ready for a change, all is not lost. There are still plenty of ways you can breathe new life into your property and fall back in love with your home – without spending a fortune!

Want to know how to give your property a new look and feel for 2023? Here the team at Square 1 Balustrades share how.

4 quick, easy (and cost-effective!) home improvements for ‘23

#1 Add a balcony

Short on space? Want to add a new dimension to your upstairs? Then how about adding a balcony?

Imagine pulling back patio doors to open up a little oasis of calm outside. Opt for glass balustrades and if there’s an attractive view, you’ll be able to enjoy it in all its glory. Not only can a new balcony create what feels like an additional room and increase living space, but it also alters the aesthetics of your property from the outside too. Done right, it can transform the look of your home and boost kerb appeal – ideal if your long-term goal is to sell up and move on.

Short on space or just not sure about committing to a bigger project – then how about a Juliet balcony?

Smaller and cheaper to install, a Juliet balcony offers many of the same advantages but without taking up any additional space. The bonus of this type of balcony is that it also rarely requires planning permission, giving you greater flexibility, and further reducing installation costs.

#2 Update your stair balustrades

A super effective way to update your home?

Switch out old wooden stair spindles for more modern balustrades. Go glass for an uber contemporary look that will not only open up your hall, stairs and landing but enhance the flow of space and increase natural light levels – all of which will help make everything feel lighter, brighter and new.

Another alternative is wire balustrades – great if you’re going for an industrial vibe. Or alternatively, to really keep costs low, you could try sanding down wooden balustrades and repainting. Go white for a fresh airy feel, match to your wall colour or pop with a contrasting shade to really shake things up. The choices and the options are endless.

#3 Change your garden design

Balustrades aren’t restricted to indoor use – they’re perfect for outside too. If you currently have wooden fencing or wooden balustrades surrounding your decking, a switch to glass, rope or wire balustrades could completely overhaul the look. Transforming the look of your garden, enhancing views, and maximising space.

Cleverly positioned balustrades can be used to redefine areas, funnel foot flow and give the impression of extending space.

#4 Get creative

If you want to overhaul the look of your home and put a new stamp on it for 2023, then the trick is not to get pigeonholed with your thinking.

Instead, try to think outside of the box.

By this we mean, change up your living space – does your lounge have to be your lounge or could it be the dining room? Repurposing rooms, or just switching around some of the furniture can make things feel new and different – without spending a penny!

Changing colour themes is also an easy way to create a new look – Magenta, soft pinks and greens look set to be this year’s hottest trends. Why not create a feature wall in these vogue colours to update things?

Don’t forget that you can also be more creative with Juliet balconies too. If an external Juliet doesn’t really work, how about using one inside? A Juliet balcony on the landing can add real style, interest, and innovation to your home, reviving its appearance for 2023.
