Glass balustrades – too hot to handle?

Glass. It’s a designer’s dream. With endless options and capabilities, these days it can be found everywhere – both inside and outside of the home.

It has many desirable qualities, not least its ability to bring the outdoors in, expand the feeling of space, open up views and allow natural light to flow.

Perhaps not so attractive though? The heat.

If you’ve ever been behind a car windscreen or sat in a conservatory on a sunny day, you’ll know only too well how quickly things can heat up. So as the summer sun makes an appearance, it’s natural to wonder about the effect using more glass could have on the temperature of your home.

But there’s no need to get all hot and bothered about it. Here the experts a Square 1 Balustrades identity 4 key reasons why temperature concerns shouldn’t stop you from investing in glass balustrades.

Reason 1 – it’s the UK

Let get real here, this is the United Kingdom. And whilst we do enjoy some glorious sunshine it’s intermittent to say the least – and never sustained for long periods of time.

April through to September are typically the warmest months but even then, we’re not talking about anything too tropical. And let’s take some guidance from our warmer neighbours, shall we? A quick look at villas and apartments abroad and you’ll see glass balconies, balustrades and doors used in abundance. Why? Because they work. Bringing the joy of the sunshine indoors, holding minimal heat and providing a fresh, contemporary look.

Reason 2 – there are easy ways to keep things cool

Typically, stairs are located in hallways where there is less light exposure, but if your balustrades or balcony will come into contact with direct sunlight, there are a number of ways you can reduce the ‘greenhouse’ effect.

Start by opening windows to keep air ventilated and, on particularly hot days, draws curtains to prevent the daylight from entering. These are natural moves on warmer days anyway and will not only help to counter the build-up of hot air but will also protect your furniture and flooring from fading and sun damage.

Reason 3 – toughened glass is more resistant to heat

Toughened glass, like that used in our glass balustrades systems, is not only designed to be much safer and stronger than ordinary glass but is also far more resistant to heat.

There’s no need to be concerned about the glass weakening or shattering if exposed to intense sunlight, nor should it ever become too hot to touch under the sun’s rays – which why it’s perfect for the garden as well as your home.

Reason 4 – the pros outweigh the cons

The impact glass balustrades have on a home’s temperature is minimal – but given the English climate, any increase that is generated should be seen as a positive rather than a negative, allowing you to save on those costly winter energy bills.

Combine this with the many other benefits of using glass and it’s clear (if you’ll excuse the pun!) that glass is a great choice.
