Some of The Most Impressive Glass Buildings in The World

Glass has been utilised for windows since the times of the Romans, dating back as far as 100 AD. However, since then, the material has been used for much more than just windows. Now, we’re in an age when entire structures are fashioned from glass and are at the forefront of the increasing futurism of our cities’ skylines. Here are some of the most impressive glass structures in the world.

The Shard

Starting close to home and standing at 309.7 meters, The Shard is the tallest building in Europe and the UK. Opening in early 2013, the tower was designed by Renzo Piano and was in planning as far back as 1998. The tower is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city and is home to a number of large business operations, as well as luxury bars and restaurants.

Louvre Pyramid

Completed in 1989, The Louvre Pyramid is one of the most iconic sites in all of Paris. Acting as the official entrance to the world-famous Louvre Museum – which was originally the Louvre Caste dating back to the 12th-century – the pyramid was constructed entirely of glass. The modern aesthetic of the structure was central to a number of controversies about the historical significance of the Louvre.

Many critics thought that the structure was ‘sacrilegious’ and in defiance of the classic Renaissance style. Although there are still some detractors, the Louvre Pyramid has largely been accepted by the French people and is now a perfect example of the beauty of architectural glazing.

The Gherkin

Back in London, 30 St Mary Axe – more commonly known as The Gherkin – has been a part of the London skyline since the mid-2000s. Erected at the old site of the Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, both of which were severely damaged by an IRA bomb in 1992, the office building is now the home of firms such as Standard Life and Regus and utilises energy saving double glazing to make it far more efficient than many of other similarly sized buildings.
