      Toughened glass

Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass.

As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, including balconies and balustrades.

      Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces.

Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered.

      What is a balustrade?

Balustrades have been used throughout architecture ever since the 17th-century, when they were commonly known as balusters. Amongst the rich history of balustrade architecture are a number of famous pieces of art, including The Palace of Versailles which was designed using open style balustrades around the boarders. It was also a balustrade that prevented Shakespeare’s Juliet from falling from her balcony.

The way that balustrades are now made may have changed, but they still remain an incredibly popular structural feature for both indoors and out. The balustrade is something we now come across numerous times in everyday life and, over the years, the humble balustrade has developed into a more modern, contemporary fixture for the home. So, what is a balustrade and how can they be used?

One of the key reasons behind the long-term success of the balustrade is its versatility. Ideal for use in both commercial and domestic architecture, modern balustrades not only look great, but they are also structurally practical. Balustrades are railings supported by balusters. They can be purely decorative, or in many cases serve a purpose be that for added safety or for additional structure. Modern balustrades have come a long way from their stone origins, and now you can benefit from a range of materials in your balustrades, including:

      • Glass
      • Stainless steel
      • Steel and wire

Not only the material, but style of a balustrade can differ to meet your specific décor needs. Whether you want a full balustrade, a frameless balustrade or even a semi-frameless, the options are huge. These structures offer an element of aesthetic appeal whilst also providing added security. Here are just a few of the places you can expect to see a balustrade:

      • Balcony
      • Decking
      • Windows
      • Internal staircases
      • External staircases
      • Swimming pools
      • Landings and hallways
      • Any other raised platform either indoors or out

If you’re interested in installing a balustrade around your home or commercial building, why not get in touch with our team who can advise you on the best type of balustrade for you.

      How much do balustrades cost?

The price of balustrades can differ greatly based on a number of factors including:

      • length
      • fixing type
      • specifics such as type of glass and additional features

Here at Square 1 Balustrades, we pride ourselves on offering incredibly competitive prices for our glass balustrades, regardless of your specific requirements. So, whether you’re looking for a stainless steel balustrade or a frameless glass balustrade, our variety of options and bespoke service are perfect for the job.

What height is the required height of a balustrade?

Although the balustrades we manufacture here at Square 1 look fantastic – their primary objective is to provide a safe and secure barrier between you and open edges. So, in order to ensure every balustrade that we sell meets legal height requirements, it is vital that the person fitting the balustrade is aware of legalities in place.

Firstly, it’s important to note that safety regulations are subject to change over time and may differ between commercial and residential properties. If you’re fitting your own balustrade and are unsure about the requirements – you can get in touch with our team of experts to clarify at any time!

The height required for balustrades differ depending on whether they are internal or external. For internal balustrades, the height must be 0.9m from where you can stand on top of the handrail. For external balustrades, the height must be 1.1m from where you can stand on top of the handrail.

Are there different types of stainless steel available?

We understand that you may have specific visions for your stainless-steel balustrades, which is why we offer a couple of types of stainless steel with a few different finished. The stainless steel we offer include AISI 304 and AIDI 316, and both of which can be finished in a brushed satin finish, or a mirror polished finish.

Although both types of stainless steel we offer here at Square 1 Balustrades look the same, they perform very differently in how they react to the surrounding environment. If you’re interested in a stainless-steel handrail or balustrade, we advise you get in touch so that we can advise you on the best options for your specific requirements.

Can I install the balustrade system myself?

If you’re a dab hand at DIY, then you’ll be happy to hear that you certainly can fit a balustrade system yourself! In fact, you can get access to a host of in-depth installation guides on our website under the ‘Help & Advice’ section!

We provide useful guides for fitting everything from glass channels to handrails – so whatever type of balustrade you’ve opted for, you should be able to find the guidance you need here.

We understand that not everyone wants to fit their own balustrades, which is why we also offer a fitting service where our experts can come out and erect your balustrade for you! If you’re interested in finding out more about getting your balustrade fitted, why not contact us today?

      What are balustrades used for?

Whether you’re opting for a glass balustrade or a more traditional metal balustrade with railings, these additions can serve as both aesthetic and practical features for your home – but what are they used for?

The answer to this may vary depending on your specific needs and preferences, but traditionally balustrades were designed to offer protection and an extra element of safety. Today, this is very much still the case and over the years we have fitted balustrades on balconies, stairs, pool sides and decking to offer security for families looking for extra peace of mind.

In some cases, balustrades may be fitted purely for visual appeal as they can add extra dimension and style to your home, whether you’re looking to create a contemporary or traditional feel.
